Chronology of the Gaztelueta Case

Here I compile some of the principal incidents, all of which
are public, that have occurred throughout these years:

  • December, 2006: Juan, at 10 years of age, begins to miss classes. The Cuatrecasas enrolled him in 1st grade of Primary school in Gaztelueta, in the year 2002. Beginning with 5th grade of Primary school, according to the preliminary investigation of the case, Juan is absent more than the usual due to medical reasons.
  • From September, 2008 to June, 2010: I meet Juan, and during this time, I’m both his teacher and his mentor.
  • June, 2010: The Cuatrecasas communicate to me that they are changing schools. Juan finishes 2nd of ESO (Spain’s equivalent to 8th grade of primary school) in June of 2010, and his parents tell me and other colleagues that they will be transferring their son to another school to strengthen his level of English. They don’t make mention to me of any bullying or abuse.
  • September, 2010: Juan begins a new school year in a new school.  In September, 2010, he begins his studies of 3rd of ESO (Spain’s equivalent of 9th grade, or freshmen year of high school) at the English College.
  • February, 2011: I express to the school my desire to enter an exchange program abroad to improve my level of English. In May, I formally write to the directors of a school in Sydney to request a teacher exchange placement. On 1 June 2011, I receive confirmation from that school that they have accepted my request.
  • May, 2011: Juan receives menacing and degrading messages. Between the months of January and May of 2011, Juan receives various messages with threats and harassment through social networks, sent by various former classmates from Gaztelueta College.
  • June, 2011: The Cuatrecasas couple turn to Gaztelueta College. On 7 June 2011, the couple informs Gaztelueta College that their son had suffered cyberbullying between January and May of 2011, and alleged school bullying a few years prior, between 2008 and 2010, implicating me as instigator.
  • September, 2011: I head off for a school year to Australia.  I instruct Spanish courses for a school year while I receive English instruction.
  • October, 2011: The Cuatrecasas turn to the Inspectorate of Education. On 3 October 2011, the family reports to the Inspectorate of Education regarding the cyberbullying suffered by their son a few months before, the alleged school bullying that occurred between 2008 and 2010, and some alleged abuses by me during those years.
  • November, 2011: Proceedings continue in the District Attorney’s Office for Juveniles. The District Attorney’s Office for Juveniles opens preliminary reports with regard to the threatening and harassing messages that were received by video call.
  • May, 2012: The District Attorney’s Office for Juveniles brings the proceedings to an end. After a number of months’ worth of proceedings, the District Attorney’s Office for Juveniles brings them to an end and does not bring charges against me.
  • August, 2012: I return from Australia. In mid-August, I return from Australia and decide to change jobs in order to separate myself from a situation that causes me unease, discomfort, and defenselessness. On 31 August 2012, I leave Gaztelueta.
  • December, 2012: A newspaper publishes several articles about the case. Despite there being no complaint and the fact that the District Attorney’s Office for Juveniles had not charged me in the case, El Mundo publishes the family’s version of the alleged sexual abuses in various articles, appearing on 30 and 31 December.
  • January, 2013: The Chief Prosecutor opens investigatory reports. The Chief Prosecutor of the Basque Country opens investigatory reports to clarify the alleged incidents that the Cuatrecasas are reporting, in a public way, through various mass media.
  • September, 2013: The Chief Prosecutor closes the case. After several months of investigation and of listening to different declarations, the Chief Prosecutor decides to close the case.
  • December, 2014: The Pope replies to a letter sent by the Cuatrecasas. The Pope answers a letter written by the family with a Christmas postcard, which the newspaper El Mundo would publish some months later, on 2 October 2015.
  • January, 2015: The Pope orders an investigation. The investigation requested by the Pope lasts several months. He sends Silverio Nieto as his delegate.
  • June, 2015: Juan reports me. On 29 June, Juan—now an adult—files a complaint before the Getxo Tribunal, for assault, sexual abuses, and against moral integrity.
  • October, 2015: The Pope’s investigation concludes. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith sends a letter, signed by Luis F. Ladaria, to the Director of Gaztelueta College, in which he informs him of the conclusions of the investigation and requests that the good name and reputation of the teacher be re-established.
  • October, 2018: The trial is held in the Provincial Court. From the 4th to the 11th of October, 2018, oral arguments are heard at my trial in the Provincial Court of Vizcaya.
  • November, 2018: The Provincial Court of Vizcaya pronounces sentence. I am sentenced to 11 years in prison for the ongoing crime of sexual abuse.
  • January, 2019: Appeal before the Supreme Court. I present an appeal to the sentence of the Provincial Court before the Supreme Court because I believe that no proof exists for a condemnation.
  • September, 2020: The Supreme Court conclusively corrects the sentence of the Court of Vizcaya. The Supreme Court slashes the sentence from 11 to 2 years.
  • February, 2022: The Constitutional Court rejects my appeal.
  • Summer, 2022: Filming of Amen: The Pope Answers.
  • September, 2022: The Vatican opens a canonical process against me.
  • November, 2022: I send a letter to the Pope, by way of the Spanish Nunciature, in which I ask him to be able to explain in person what has occurred. I receive no response. In Religión Digital, in March 2023, I read that the Pope has decided not to receive me, at least for the time being.
  • March, 2023: Monsignor Satué, the papal delegate, meets with my attorneys in Pamplona.
  • April, 2023: Broadcast of Amen: The Pope Answers.
